Cali. bill protecting renter payment rights passes

SACRAMENTO

Senate Bill 1055 stops landlords from forcing tenants to pay rent online. Last year the state was flooded with complaints when a major Los Angeles landlord instituted a rent payment online only policy.

State Senator Ted Lieu authored the bill and says landlords can save money collecting rent online, but that giving tenants only one payment option is an indefensible act, "That has a very desperate impact on the poor, the those who don't have a computer, on senior citizens and those who don't have internet connection. My bill says you can't do that. If you want to have them pay online, you also have to give them an option by paying by cash or check or money order as well."

The bill passed the Senate with a unanimous vote.
