Second case of West Nile reported in Contra Costa Co.

BRENTWOOD, Calif.

Thursday night, fogging trucks sprayed pesticides in parts of Brentwood and Discovery Bay to try to eradicate mosquitoes which carry the virus.

County health officials confirm that the latest woman to get sick lives in East County and first showed symptoms early August. Along with a man in Solano County, they are the first human cases this year in the Bay Area. They are all recovering.

In the meantime, a 74-year-old man in Placer County is the newest death blamed on the virus. A volunteer with the sheriff's K-9 program there died after ten days in the hospital.

So far, five people in California have died from West Nile this year.
