Runway closure could cause weekend delays at SFO

SAN FRANCISCO

The first temporary shutdown will begin Friday at 10 p.m. and last until Monday at 8 a.m., SFO spokesman Mike McCarron said.

Crews will be extending a runway, installing lights and driving timber piles on the approach trestle light structure.

During the closure, the flight arrival rate will be reduced from 60 aircraft per hour to 30 aircraft per hour, McCarron said.

Inbound flights originating within two hours of SFO will potentially experience delays during peak travel times.

The second temporary shutdown is scheduled for Friday Sept. 21 at 10 p.m. until Monday Sept. 24 at 8 a.m., and a third will occur between Friday Sept. 28 at 10 p.m. and Monday Oct. 1 at 8 a.m.

Passengers traveling through SFO are advised to check with individual air carriers before departing for the airport.
