Snowfall blasts Sierra's higher altitudes

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif.

Parts of Interstate 80 between Tahoe and Truckee were closed Tuesday, off and on, due to poor driving conditions.

Forecasters have been calling for up to 2 feet of snow in the highest elevations in the northern Sierra Nevada. It's a good sign for a state that depends on snow accumulation for its water supply.

Chain controls were in effect Monday on U.S. Highway 50 southwest of Lake Tahoe. East of Nevada City, five big rigs jackknifed after at least 6 inches of snow accumulated by midmorning.

A forecaster says snow showers are expected to continue into Tuesday night in higher elevations.
