SJ firefighter suffers a neck fracture in fire

SAN JOSE, Calif.

The 16-year veteran captain firefighter was injured when a ceiling collapsed on him. He was treated at a local hospital and is being monitored overnight, San Jose fire Capt. Rob Brown said.

San Jose firefighters received a call at 8:23 p.m. on Thanksgiving Day reporting a fire at a two-story apartment complex at 938 Willow Leaf Drive.

Flames and water damaged four of the building's six units by the time the fire was under control at 11:24 p.m., Brown said.

A resident was also transported to the hospital for medical reasons not caused by the fire, according to Brown.

The fire also displaced 18 residents from the apartment's six units, Brown said.

While the cause of the fire has not been determined, residents of the building told firefighters that a fire had been lit in a fireplace, which may have caused the roof to catch fire, Brown said.
