Man killed during home invasion in Monte Sereno

MONTE SERENO, Calif.

A woman called 9-1-1 just after 1:30 a.m. saying someone had ransacked the house. When police arrived, they found the woman's husband dead inside the home. Police are waiting for the coroner to tell them how the man died. "This is an extremely safe community in an extremely safe neighborhood," police Sgt. Kerry Harris said. "It's well off the beaten path, so it isn't the type of place where somebody would just stop and say, 'Oh I think we should go rob that place.'"

The home where the crime happened is so large that up to 20 investigators went through it looking for clues. Because of the rain, police collecting evidence outside worked quickly.

The crime has really rattled neighbors in the very affluent area spotted with gated homes. Police say the last murder on record in Monte Sereno happened 40 years ago. "I'm very surprised it happened at this house because this house is well gated and it's a huge place and you literally have to know this house to be able to do what has been done today," neighbor Steve Mortara said. "So, we're all shocked about this."

Police have not released the names of the middle-aged couple that lived at the house. The wife was taken to a hospital, but authorities say she will be OK. Friday evening, police said they had found no signs of forced evidence.

Anyone with information about the incident is asked to contact the Los Gatos/Monte Sereno Police Department at (408) 827-3219 or after hours (408) 354-8600.
