Man arrested in highway shooting that wounded 2

BELMONT, Calif.

The San Jose Mercury News reports that Eric Valencia Vargas was arrested on suspicion of attempted murder Thursday in Redwood City.

Belmont police believe Valencia is responsible for firing a dozen shots at another vehicle on Sept. 30.

Two men, 24 and 19 years old, were hit by the gunfire, and their car veered off the freeway and into some bushes in San Carlos.

Police say the shooting was likely spurred by a gang rivalry, but were not sure if it was related to an ongoing war between East Palo Alto and Menlo Park gangs.

Police said one victim was treated and immediately released; the other was hospitalized for several days.
