An elderly dog that was found tied to a pole in downtown Santa Cruz and wearing a sign that read "Homeless" was rescued and has received treatment, the county animal shelter said.

The black and white female Cocker Spaniel was found tied to a pole near Soquel and Front streets on Wednesday, Dec. 12, the Santa Cruz County Animal Shelter said.

The dog was found with a severe open wound that was infected on her underside, which had been wrapped with an ACE bandage but the dog had not received proper veterinary care.

She was brought to the Santa Cruz County Animal Shelter, where her wound was cleaned and was put on pain medication and antibiotics, the shelter said.

Anyone with additional information about the dog is encouraged to call Field Services manager Todd Stosuy (831) 454-7254.
