Suspect sought in fatal New Year's Day stabbing

SAN FRANCISCO

The victim, identified by the medical examiner's office as 30-year-old San Francisco resident Walter Smith, was found suffering from a stab wound to the neck at about 3:15 a.m. Tuesday near Third Street and Ingerson Avenue.

Smith was taken to San Francisco General Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at about 3:45 a.m., police spokesman Officer Gordon Shyy said.

The suspect, described as a bald black man in his 20s, remained at large as of this morning, Shyy said.
