California to see surge in flu cases in January

ABC News medical editor Dr. Richard Besser says California cannot escape the earliest flu outbreak in the United States in a decade.

"It could be that it's a newer strain people in the community haven't seen, it could be that not enough people are vaccinated, but one of the most interesting theories have to do with humidity -- what some scientists are finding is the lower the absolute humidity, the earlier flu season starts," Besser said.

Besser suggests getting your vaccine now because it takes two weeks to build up immunity.

Typically, February is the peak season for the flu in California.
