Lost dog found in New Mexico, returned to owner

Pooka the chiweenie was found roaming the streets of Espanola, New Mexico two weeks ago.

She was turned over to a shelter and then taken in by Melanie Lopez.

As it turned out, Pooka had a microchip and a quick scan determined she belonged to a family from Kentucky more than 1200 miles away.

The family will be flying in on Wednesday to bring her home.

"I can't even imagine how excited to get to see her like this, that you want Wednesday to get here really soon. It just shows there's always hope, even a year later, a year and a half later, you may never know when your dog will turn up," Lopez said.

It's likely no one will ever know how Pooka got to New Mexico. But at this point, you can bet that family from Kentucky doesn't care that much. They're just happy to be getting their dog back.

If you're wondering, it costs $45 to have a microchip implanted in your pet.
