Efforts to expand double-fine traffic zones in SF

An effort is under way to permanently extend double-fine zones on two of San Francisco's most dangerous streets, Van Ness and 19th Avenue.

State Senator Leland Yee says the number of pedestrian fatalities dramatically decreased since the double fines went into effect back in 2008. There were 15 deaths on Van Ness and 19th Avenue from 2003 to 2007, but not a single one in 2009 and 2010.

Statistics for the last two years haven't been released.

The current law expires at the end of 2013.
