Waterway connecting Lake Merritt to San Francisco Bay reopens

OAKLAND, Calif.

It's part of a project that will ultimately allow boaters in the nation's oldest wildlife preservation to once again paddle from the lake to San Francisco Bay.

A 750 foot section of the channel was opened Friday for the first time since the 1860's after undergoing a major cleanup. It's part of a multimillion dollar restoration project to improve the once stagnant and polluted waterway.

The city will hold a public celebration for this and other Lake Merritt improvements later this summer.
