Italy's Mount Etna erupted on Tuesday, sending plumes of ash and lava into the night sky on the island of Sicily.

Roads close to the volcano were covered with volcanic stones. But flights to and from a nearby airport were not affected.

Italian officials say they've recently registered increased explosive activity by the volcano.

At over 9,842 feet high, Mount Etna is the tallest active volcano in Europe.
