GGNRA to feel impact of federal budget cuts

SAN FRANCISCO

The Golden Gate National Recreation Area spans from Muir Woods to Crissy Field. Officials say they must cut almost 9 percent of their budget, which means the park will have dirtier bathrooms and fewer park rangers.

The cuts come just as the park service was supposed to be hiring more summer help. "Right now we're looking at having 30 fewer permanent positions and 10-15 fewer seasonal positions than we would normally have at this time of year," said National Parks Service spokesperson Alexandra Picavet.

Visitors will see a lot more closed attractions. Historic areas like Fort Point won't be open for as many days during the summer. Alcatraz will not be affected by the cuts.
