AC Transit plans to reduce fares, eliminate transfer discounts

East Bay bus riders could be paying less for rides under a new proposal put forth by AC Transit, but there's catch. The agency is considering lowering the base fare for adults to $2 from the current $2.10.

However, the agency would eliminate transfers, meaning passengers would be asked to pay $2 for every bus ride they take. A day pass would be introduced for riders who need to take several trips in a single day.

The AC Transit board is asking passengers for their input on the plan. Fares are poised to jump to $2.25 on July 1, but these changes could eliminate the fare hike.

The agency is also considering changing bus routes to bring more service to the busiest lines.
