Hayward police arrest 3 after chase, crash on I-580 in Oakland

OAKLAND, Calif.

Hayward police spotted a silver 2000 Toyota Camry being driven erratically in the area of West Tennyson Road and Tyrrell Avenue just after midnight and began to follow it, but the driver accelerated away, Hayward police Lt. Mark Stuart said.

Police pursued the car as it went into Oakland on Interstate Highway 880. The driver then took I-980 to I-580 and crashed near Park Avenue on eastbound I-580, Stuart said.

The car matched the description of a vehicle sought in a shooting that was reported at 2:52 p.m. Sunday near West Tennyson Road and Calaroga Avenue in Hayward, Stuart said.

In the shooting, the occupants of the suspect vehicle were chasing another vehicle and fired shots at it, he said.

One of those shots struck an unintended target -- a person sitting in another car, Stuart said. The victim's injuries are not considered life-threatening.

After the crash on I-580, the car's three occupants were arrested and four weapons were collected from the vehicle, Stuart said.

The vehicle had been stolen from San Jose, and Hayward police are trying to determine if any of the recovered weapons were used in the shooting.

The three were booked into Alameda County Jail. Their names have not been released.
