A new program was launched this week at Los Angeles International Airport called Pets Unstressing Passengers, or PUP for short.
"We are pleased to launch the PUP program during in honor of National Volunteer Week," Los Angeles World Airports Executive Director Gina Marie Lindsey said in a statement. "It's a great opportunity to spread happiness to millions of travelers from all over the world. Expect to see the PUP's on a regular basis in Terminals at LAX."
Airport officials say the furry volunteers will roam through the gate areas in each terminal. The goal is to have the pups ease tense travelers as they wait for their flights.
Research shows pet therapy helps people relax by decreasing blood pressure and heart rate.
Officials hope the dogs will help improve the atmosphere inside the airport. In 2012, Travel Magazine named LAX the second-worst airport for passenger satisfaction.
