BEYOND THE HEADLINES
June 9, 2013
Juneteenth Roundtable
Guest-hosted by ABC7's Ama Daetz

This week's episode of "Beyond the Headlines" is a very special roundtable discussion in celebration of an important national commemoration known as Juneteenth, which reminds us each of us to remember the end of slavery in the United States. Juneteenth also looks to the future of the African American community, with a focus on education and enrichment. ABC7's Ama Daetz guest hosts for Cheryl Jennings, leading an in-depth discussion with local leaders about some of the current issues facing our African American and bay area communities.

The celebration of Juneteenth highlights the moment on June 19th, 1865, when the enslaved Africans and African Americans in Texas learned they were finally free – two years after President Abraham Lincoln's Emancipation Proclamation had actually freed them. This long overdue announcement effectively brought the end to government-sanctioned slavery in the United States. Now, almost 150 years later, Juneteenth marks a time for remembrance and togetherness. Local celebrations (listed below) will happen throughout the month of June.
