After a year and a half of culling through 6,000 applicants, NASA has chosen four men and four women to train to become astronauts -- and one of them is from the Bay Area.

Nicole Mann is a major in the U.S. Marine Corps and a fighter pilot. She is from Penngrove -- in Sonoma County and went to Stanford.

She and the seven other men and women could take part in the first human mission to an asteroid and to Mars. By the way ? Tuesday is the 30th anniversary of the first American woman in space.

Sally Ride also attended Stanford. She died last year of pancreatic cancer.
