Man fatally shot in Richmond overnight

RICHMOND, Calif.

Shortly after 12:30 a.m. police received multiple calls reporting shots fired at a multi-building apartment complex in the 3200 block of Pullman Avenue, Richmond police Lt. Tickett said.

Upon arrival, emergency crews located a man in his 30s who had been hit by gunfire. He was in critical condition and despite the life-saving efforts made by paramedics, he was pronounced dead at the scene, according to Tickett.

Police were alerted to a suspect who had reportedly fled into one of the apartments in the complex.

A SWAT team evacuated residents of about eight units and made entry into the apartments to search for the suspect, police said.

The residents and witnesses were escorted to a community center located nearby while police investigated the homicide and searched the vicinity.

It took the SWAT team about an hour to secure the apartment complex and to allow residents to return to their homes. The area directly surrounding the homicide remains cordoned off this morning, Tickett said.

The suspect had not been located as of about 5 a.m., police said.

He is described as a black man between 5 feet 7 inches and 5 feet 8 inches tall, weighing about 180 pounds. He was wearing dark clothing at the time of shooting. Police have not recovered a weapon.

The identity of the victim is being withheld until his family has been notified, according to police.
