San Francisco police hope robbery video will help catch suspect

SAN FRANCISCO

(WARNING: Surveillance video is graphic)

For all the pride, joy, and triumph that flowed and poured through San Francisco last weekend, it did not end well for everyone. At 1:50 a.m. Sunday morning and Market and Dolores streets, a security camera captured video of a robbery and assault that ended with a kick to the face as witnesses just walking by.

San Francisco police say the victim is a 20-year-old woman. She lost her cellphone and purse in the assault. They would not reveal her name or medical condition.

"My initial reaction was disgust," San Francisco Police Ofc. Albie Esparza said.

Fortunately for police, the video contains a gold mine of information. They have already arrested three unidentified people, two adult women and one man for the crime, but the man who delivered the kick remains at large. Police want help identifying and finding him.

They also want to know if there were other, unreported assaults the night of Pink Saturday on Market Street between Civic Center and Castro Street.

Police are not calling the assault a hate crime.

"In order for it to be a hate crime, there needs to be certain elements to that crime; it can't just simply be an assault," Esparza said.
