Some drivers in Marin County may have spotted fake road signs, though the prank was so well done many probably didn't even notice.

A Napa artist has admitted he is the person behind a series of fake highway signs in Marin County.

The signs read "speed enforced by drones" and show a missile firing from the craft.

They appeared last week on Highway 101 and Highway 37.

Artist Stephen Whisler, 59, says the prank is a political statement on the use of drones for spying and warfare.

The California Highway Patrol is investigating and Whisler could face a penalty for putting up unauthorized signs.
