Retailer drops girls' math shirt after complaints of sexism

SECAUCUS, N.J.

The girls' shirts said "My best subjects" at the top and had checks in boxes next to shopping, music and dancing. The box next to math was blank. Under, it said, "Well, nobody's perfect."

The Secaucus, N.J.-based retailer tweeted Monday evening that it was pulling the shirt from stores and apologized "to anyone we may have offended."

But it wasn't enough.

Hundreds of people posted complaints on the company's Facebook page, saying it perpetuated a harmful stereotype that girls are bad at math.

The company also apologized on Facebook, writing, "We take feedback from our customers very seriously. It has come to our attention that some of you view our Best Subjects T shirt as insensitive towards girls and women. This was not our intent. There are countless women in all walks of life who excel in math, including our very own CEO. We have pulled this product from our stores and we want to express our apologies to anyone we may have offended."

The Children's Place Retail Stores Inc. has about 1,100 stores.
