Dad believes son is innocent in Leila Fowler's murder

CALAVERAS COUNTY, Calif.

Barney Fowler's son is accused of stabbing his sister, Leila to death in the Valley Springs home where they lived, back in April. Fowler is speaking out -- saying his son is innocent. Fowler says he turned his son into authorities after investigators named him a suspect and that was hard enough -- let alone dealing with all the rumors about what happened. He won't say why he believes authorities arrested his son, but, he says they're wrong.

"I was the first one in that house, I saw his demeanor. I've seen the way he carried himself the two weeks he was out after that. I don't think he did it," said Fowler.

Fowler says the family was cooperating with authorities in the beginning, but after they named his son a suspect, authorities stopped talking to them. The brother and sister had been home alone when Leila was killed. At the time, the boy told authorities a man with long gray hair came into the house and stabbed Leila.

The 12-year-old is charged with second degree murder and special allegation for the use of a dangerous weapon. He pleaded not guilty last week in juvenile court.
