Disabled SJ veteran's service dog that ran away found dead

SAN JOSE, Calif.

The dog, named Lobo, has lived with Jeff Wilson for more than a year and a half. The Army veteran works with Operation Freedom Paws, an organization that rescues dogs from shelters then pairs them with disabled veterans.

According to a post on the group's Facebook page, Wilson just had knee surgery and couldn't run after Lobo when he got spooked and ran away on Tuesday afternoon.

Officials say Lobo was run over by a car on Berryessa Road Wednesday night.

Another post on the Operation Freedom Paws Facebook page reads, "Thank you all for the outpouring of community support in the search for Lobo. It meant so much to Jeff, Gwen, and all of us at Operation Freedom Paws. Lobo was a true leader in our pack, and will be sorely missed by humans and dogs alike. Please send healing energy and love to Jeff, who has lost part of his heart today."
