Beyond the Headlines

Show topic: Suicide Prevention

BEYOND THE HEADLINES
August 25, 2013
Suicide Prevention
Hosted by ABC7's Cheryl Jennings

In this week's episode of "Beyond the Headlines," we look at suicide prevention, including warning signs, symptoms and different ways you could help.

From 1999 to 2010, the number of people who chose to take their own lives increased by nearly 30 percent to over 38,000, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, making it the tenth leading cause of death among Americans.

Joining us are members from the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention, the Bridge Rail Foundation, and the Family Acceptance Project. They share information on recognizing signs and symptoms that may lead to self harm or suicide, as well as their personal stories and struggles in the wake of a loved one taking their own life. We also hear from a man who battles mental health issues and speaks firsthand about life after a suicide attempt.
