Montana judge's apology rejected by victim's mother

BILLINGS, Mont.

District Judge G. Todd Baugh apologized Thursday for saying the 14-year-old girl who had sex with her teacher was "older than her chronological age."

The teen's mother, Auliea Hanlon, says Baugh's apology was "irrelevant" because he has stood by the 30-day prison sentence given to rapist and former teacher Stacey Rambold.

She adds that Baugh's behavior sets a bad precedent for cases like this.

"It discourages other kids from coming forward," Hanlon said. "If they come forward, what's going to happen? Nothing."

Cherice Moralez killed herself before the case came to trial, just a few weeks shy of her 17th birthday.

About 40,000 people have signed an online petition demanding Bough's resignation.

The judge says he has no intention of resigning.
