Burlingame police warn about elaborate theft

BURLINGAME, Calif.

Police say an elderly woman was driving on El Camino Real near Edgehill Drive Tuesday, when a van pulled up alongside her. The people inside the van told the woman there was something wrong with her car, so she stopped. That's when police say she was ripped off.

"When she pulled over they told her there was an issue with one of the tires, distracted her in a way to get her to go into the trunk while one of the persons reached into her car and took her wallet out of her purse," said Burlingame Police Sgt. Kevin Kashiwahara.

There have been some similar incidents targeting the elderly around the Bay Area. Police say the most important thing is to be aware of your surroundings and keep your car doors locked all the time.
