The San Francisco Chronicle reports in one instance, auditors boarded a training bus and found the instructor napping while the rookie driver navigated heavy traffic; on another trip, they found the instructor chatting with passengers.
The six month audit also found training classes often canceled because instructors were chronically absent. Muni is short 100 drivers because it didn't hire enough recruits, even though it's in the budget. The shortage is causing an average of 38 runs a day to be cancelled and more than $4 million in overtime pay for fill-in drivers.
