On Thursday, the Board of Supervisors Neighborhood Services Committee approved the city's first ever bike theft prevention plan.
It comes as bicycle thefts, like one captured in May by ABC7 News, have jumped 70 percent in the last six years.
The plan includes a bicycle registration program, more bike racks, and teaching riders the right way to lock up a bike.
Police are also setting up stolen bike stings.
"We set a bicycle out and lock it poorly and we hope somebody comes along and steals it, basically," Officer Matt Friedman said. "And then we follow those people back to wherever they are stashing bikes and then we make an arrest."
Some of those people arrested appear on the police departments SFPD Bike Theft Twitter feed, along with pictures of stolen and recovered bikes.
