A man and a woman were injured in a shooting in East Palo Alto early this morning, police said.

At about 1:24 a.m., officers received a report of a vehicle being followed closely by another vehicle.

Shortly thereafter, a ShotSpotter activation alerted police to gunshots fired near the intersection of University and Michigan avenues, near Jack Farrell Park.

Police then received a 911 call from a victim of a gunshot wound in the 2200 block of University Avenue.

Officers located a parked vehicle with a shattered rear window and made contact with the occupants of the vehicle. Officers discovered that two of the three occupants had been shot, according to police.

The passenger in the back seat, an 18-year-old East Palo Alto woman, sustained a bullet wound to her left arm, police said.

The driver, a 27-year-old Newark man, sustained a bullet wound to his right arm. The injuries to both occupants are not considered life-threatening, according to police.

The third passenger, who was sitting in the front seat, did not sustain any injuries, police said.

According to the preliminary police investigation, two or three suspects in a white newer model Toyota Camry with tinted windows followed the victims as they were driving east on University Avenue.

The suspects fired upon the victims from their vehicle in the 2400 block of University Avenue, injuring two of the three occupants, police said.

The victims turned their vehicle around and drove west toward the 2200 block of University Avenue. Meanwhile, the suspect vehicle fled the area, according to police.

Emergency crews from Menlo Park arrived on scene first and rendered medical aid to the victims. The victims were then transported to a local hospital for further medical treatment, according to police.
