Bicyclists allowed to bring bikes on BART starting Dec. 1

OAKLAND, Calif.

Bay Area Rapid Transit spokeswoman Luna Salaver says that on Dec. 1, bikes will be allowed, with a few safety restrictions.

Bikes won't be permitted in the first car at any time, or in the first three cars during peak commuting times of 7 to 9 a.m. and 4:30 to 6:30 p.m.

The first three car rule provides an option for passengers who want to avoid bikes.

They also won't be allowed on crowded trains or allowed to block doorways or aisles.

Starting in 2012, BART conducted two five-day bike pilot tests, as well as an extended trial. The agency found that with each pilot, acceptance of bikes increased among passengers.
