Schools briefly placed on lockdown for false sighting of gunman

ALAMEDA, Calif.

Officers were notified around 9:45 a.m. about a man with a gun near the rear schoolyard at Academy of Alameda Middle School at 401 Pacific Ave., police said.

Island High School, Alternatives in Action, Woodstock Child Development Center, Nea Community Learning Center and the Academy of Alameda Middle School were placed on lockdown while officers searched for the man, who had been spotted on the corner of Buena Vista Avenue and Poggi Street.

Officers found a man at Fifth Street and Lincoln Avenue whom a witness identified as the man she had seen with a gun.

Police said he did not have a gun, but he was cited for having drug paraphernalia on him. He also had a cellphone on him, which may have been mistaken for a gun, police said.

Officers searched the surrounding area for a possible gun and did not find anything.

After 15 minutes, the lockdowns were lifted after it was determined the man posed no danger, police said.
