Group wants high school to drop 'Arabs' mascot

CALIFORNIA

The Coachella Valley High School Arabs mascot is under fire from a national organization. The American Arab Anti-Discrimination Committee is urging the school to drop the "Arab" name because it enforces negative stereotypes of Arabs and Arab-Americans.

Alumni disagree. They believe the mascot honors the Arab culture and its role in the East Valley and its link to date farmers.

The district is taking up the issue at a meeting later this month.
