San Francisco Filipino groups collecting, calling for donations

SAN FRANCISCO

As the United States has committed $20 million in aid, much of it in food, the Philippines government has raised the death toll to 1,774 and there are fears that could rise to as many as 10,000.

Volunteers from the Filipino Community Center in San Francisco spent Monday afternoon asking for monetary donations. They have a network of organizations in the Philippines that will be able to find where the help is needed the most.

At the West Bay Pilipino Multi-Service Center, people have donated canned goods and other items. Another agency has donated the cost of shipping those goods to the Philippines - something that can be very expensive.

The typhoon has displaced more than half a million people.
