Vallejo High School to retire 'Apaches' mascot

VALLEJO, Calif

A unanimous vote by the school board Tuesday night put an end to the controversial mascot, which will be officially retired next June.

The mascot has been a source of tension between people who believe the name honors the Apache and those who feel it is offensive to American Indians.

The Vallejo Times Herald reports that the district has outlined a plan to pick a new mascot with a school design team developing ideas.

It will be voted on by staff and students and revealed in January.
