The crime spree started around 10:35 a.m. at a townhouse about a mile away on Luz Avenue. The suspect is accused of stabbing four adults there. Police believe they knew each other.
Then the suspect ran off and carjacked a van at the Mayfair Village Senior Apartments on North Jackson Avenue.
The van got onto Highway 680 in the wrong direction and eventually was pursued by police to the intersection of White and Mabury Roads.
"It was going fast. He was going like this and that. We were at the other side in the opposite direction. He was driving in the middle of the road, zig, zagging or something," neighbor Joy Yap said.
The suspect then made a critical mistake. He turned onto a cul-de-sac on Kirk Glen Drive with no way out and that's when neighbors heard gunfire.
"They were gunshots. You could tell. They were gunshots," neighbor Eric Bones said.
David Louie: Was there any return gunfire by the police?
"We don't know, we don't know. It was just five, six times in a row. Yeah, that's it," Bones said.
The suspect was fatally shot by a police officer after he allegedly rammed into a patrol car.
"The officer feared for his life and fired his duty weapon at the suspect. The suspect vehicle then crashed into a residence on Kirk Glen and was struck by at least one round from the officer's duty weapon. The suspect has been pronounced deceased at the scene," San Jose police Sgt. Heather Randol said.
The stabbing victims were taken to Regional Medical Center with non-life threatening injuries.
San Jose police homicide detectives are investigating the case, as is standard procedure.
