Someone claiming to be behind a security breach of Snapchat users says the goal is to raise public awareness about online security holes in the popular photo-sharing app.

The account information was posted to a website that went online Tuesday night and is now taken down, but before that happened, it showed usernames and partial phone numbers of more than 4.5 million Snapchat accounts.

Snapchat warned that this might happen; the company says it has put in safeguards to make the data breach more difficult.

The company was founded two years ago by two former Stanford University fraternity brothers.
