A soldier born and raised in Salinas was killed on his third tour of duty in Afghanistan.

The Department of Defense says 43-year-old U.S. Army Chief Warrant Officer Edward Balli died when his outpost was attacked by insurgents in the Kandahar Province on Monday.

Balli's family says he dreamed of retiring in four years in Hawaii where he and his wife own a home.
