1 dog shot, another captured after SF mauling

SAN FRANCISCO

Authorities say two pit bulls attacked and bit a man at a picnic area located at the 25th Avenue entrance to the park. Neighbors heard the cry for help and called 911. A second man tried to help and he was also bitten. Police believe the man who jumped in to help may have been the dog owner.

Animal control tried to corral the animals and when that failed, police shot one of the dogs. The second pit bull ran away and was found around 8:30 a.m. near Haight and Stanyan streets. The dog's fate remains unknown.

The first man who was bit is in the hospital in stable condition; the other man declined medical attention.
