Vacaville police shoot passenger in speeding car

VACAVILLE, Calif.

Officers responded just before midnight to a disturbance involving four people at the Hide-A-Way Lounge and Grill at 1080 Orange Drive, Vacaville city spokesman Mark Mazzaferro said.

At the same time, another officer had pulled over a vehicle in the area of Walnut and Leisure Town roads, not far from the Hide-A-Way bar, Mazzaferro said.

Officers in another patrol car also responded to the traffic stop and pulled behind the vehicle that was stopped, Mazzaferro said.

The four people involved in the disturbance at the Hide-A-Way got into a car and drove around an empty lot near a hotel, Mazzaferro said.

The vehicle then sped between 50-70 mph without its headlights on toward the two patrol cars and the stopped vehicle, according to Mazzaferro.

The police officers jumped out of the way and were not hit, but one of the patrol cars was damaged, Mazzaferro said.

One of the officers fired his gun at the speeding car, hitting a front seat passenger in the lower leg, Mazzaferro said. The car then crashed into a high-voltage power box and stopped and all four occupants were taken into custody, he said.

The driver was arrested on suspicion of DUI and assault with a deadly weapon, while the person who was shot in the leg was treated at a hospital, Mazzaferro said. His injuries were not life-threatening.

Mazzaferro did not know if the other three people in the car will face charges.
