San Mateo's GoPro plans to go public

SAN MATEO, Calif.

GoPro has been around for more than a decade. It is the brainchild of an avid surfer who invented a lightweight camera to film his big wave adventures.

The camera has caught on -- GoPro sold 2.3 million cameras last year and now has a staff of almost 700 people.

Because the company makes less than $1 billion a year, though, its application for an initial public is confidential, so we may not know much more until just before the stock goes on sale.
