Stanford reopens after suspicious package deemed harmless

PALO ALTO, Calif.

Campus police received a report of a suspicious package near the Tresidder Memorial Union building around 8:55 a.m., and a bomb squad was called in, police said.

A statement on the university's emergency information web page said the Tressider building and several nearby buildings were evacuated and the occupants of buildings along the campus' Salvatierra Walk were asked to shelter in place "out of an abundance of caution."

Around 12:30 p.m., police said there was no threat to the campus and evacuated students and staff were allowed to return.

University officials said the rest of the campus stayed open during the evacuation and classes continued.
