San Francisco burger joint open nearly 50 years about to close

SAN FRANCISCO

Joe's Cable Car Restaurant on Mission Street opened 49 years ago.

The restaurant's namesake, Joe Obegi, has been there all along, grinding top-drawer chuck steak into 8-ounce patties. But on Sunday, his place will serve its last meal.

Joe says long-time customers who have grown up visiting his restaurant are coming back for one last burger.

"They're breaking my heart," he said. I'm going to miss them so much. Cause I'm used to seeing them every day and now one day soon I'm going to get up and there's no one smiling at me."

Joe says he decided not to sell the place because he's worried any new owners would change his penchant for a quality burger.

As for his employees, Joe is giving them two week's pay.

All of them have new jobs lined up because, as Joe says, they're just that good.
