Mortgage relief event to be held in Oakland

OAKLAND, Calif.

On Wednesday, hundreds of bank representatives and non-profit financial counselors will be on hand for the American Dream Event in Oakland.

Anyone with mortgage trouble can show up and try to get their payments reduced.

Organizers say a surprising number of home owners are still in trouble, despite the improving economy.

"Over 6,000 plus homes that are in some stage of foreclosure, whether its auction, bank-owned, foreclosure filing, it's alarming when you look 6,000 plus families that could possibly become homeless, that number is alarming," Neighborhood Assistance Corporation of America spokesperson Rick Herrera said.

The service is free and you don't have to be going to foreclosure to get help.

The event runs Thursday through Monday at the Oakland Marriott.
