San Francisco Zoo welcomes 10-month-old red panda

SAN FRANCISCO

A 10-month-old male red panda has arrived at the zoo, along with a new enclosure and a custom-made treehouse made by Pete Nelson and his crew from Animal Planet's hit show "Treehouse Masters."

The species is native to the eastern Himalayas and western China.

But experts say it faces the threat of severely reduced habitat due to human development.

The panda's name will be announced next week. Philanthropists Barry and Marie Lipman donated $31,000 to name it.

The Red Panda exhibit will open to the public on May 10, with an exclusive preview for SFZS Members that day from 9:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m.
