SAN FRANCISCO (KGO) -- The San Francisco Police Department is getting a $200,000 grant to improve pedestrian safety. So far this year, 17 people have been killed on San Francisco streets. Last year 21 pedestrians died.

The grant comes from the state Office Of Traffic Safety. The money will be used to increase enforcement at high traffic intersections.

"Know that when you are crossing the street in San Francisco, that you are in harm's way. Do not assume anything. Please don't be distracted by an electronic device," San Francisco Police Chief Greg Suhr said.

In addition to handing out more traffic tickets, San Francisco police will use the funds to make safety presentations at schools and to community groups.
