Officials are warning millions of Americans who are waiting for new credit cards with more secure chip technology to be aware of a new possible scam.

The new chip technology is designed to reduce fraud, including counterfeiting.

However, the Federal Trade Commission said scammers are trying to take advantage of the millions of consumers who haven't received a chip card yet by sending out fake emails, pretending to be credit card issuers.

The FTC said consumers should not give out personal information.

Officials said if you're not sure if an email is legitimate to call the phone number on the back of the credit card to get more details.
