SANTA CRUZ, Calif. (KGO) -- UC Santa Cruz is announcing a scholarship in honor of an alumni officer killed in the line of duty.

Santa Cruz police detective Elizabeth Butler was killed on the job last year. She and Detective Sergeant Loran Baker were shot and killed while investigating a sexual assault suspect. The Elizabeth Butler Memorial Scholarship will support a UC Santa Cruz student working on a field study in Santa Cruz County.

Butler graduated from UC Santa Cruz's community studies program in 1996.
